While doing some random internet reading, I found an article on black-owned vineyards. While reading the article, I discovered that one of these vineyards was not too far from Savannah. So, I decided to go check it out today.
I plugged in the address in GPS and headed on my way to a town called Round O. Round O is a smaller town between Walterboro, SC and Summerville, SC. It was an easy, lazy drive in. Only about 4 turns once you get off I-95. But like my grandma used to say about the town she grew up in.... if you sneeze, you will miss it. Upon pulling up to Bowman Farms, there is an older house with a Magnolia tree shading the porch. I was greeted by the owner, Matthew Bowman. Mr. Bowman gave me a tour of what was the family house that he grew up and and gave me some history of him and his siblings and their military careers. We settled at the bar, and I got a chance to sample the Palmetto Blush Wine. A semi-sweet wine that seemed perfect for a summer afternoon. After sampling the wine and having a chat about traveling and the history of the vineyard, I was surprised to find out that the wine is even labeled in house. Mr. Bowman took me on a tour of the property. Beyond just having the Muscadine and Scuppernog vines, there were many young trees on the property. Pears, persimmons, peaches, and plums. I am sure in a few years this will become a very nice orchard. Also on the property was two quaint chicken houses. I also discovered that the larger vineyard is down the road a bit. The trip to Bowman Vineyards was a relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and I would do it again. if you are in the Savannah or Charleston area, be sure to check them out! And tell him Cammi from Savannah sent ya! Check them out online!
